Opposition: Despite deal, Syria, Russia besieging us in Daraa

The Syrian opposition in Daraa has accused the regime and Russia of besieging areas they control in the province despite an agreement reached with Moscow to allow fighters to leave the area.

A spokesman for the opposition in Daraa; Hussein Abu Shaima said: “There are fears that the delay in implementing the displacement clause, which allows fighters and civilians to leave the province, aims to get rid of them by storming the areas and making arrests.”

Abu Shaimaa told the Anadolu Agency that “cities and towns in Daraa have come under siege after the regime gained control of most of the border with Jordan.”

He pointed out that Russia and the Syrian regime “did not abide by the terms agreed with the opposition factions, most notably the deployment of Russian military police in the opposition control areas and preventing the regime forces’ presence on the international road between Damascus and Amman.”

He added that the Syrian regime also did not withdraw from four areas it has recently controlled in Daraa’s eastern countryside and did not allow the return of displaced persons as agreed.

The areas of Daraa, Quneitra and Suwayda are designated de-escalation zones under an agreement reached last year between Russia, the United States and Jordan.
